Hangs In The Balance [Jun. 20th, 2005|01:35 pm]
I have officially entered the hell-hole of 'Uncertainty'.

This is just like one of those moments in RPGs where the decision you make determines the final end-game sequence you treat your character to.

Pivoting.

No save game points to bring me back if I make the wrong decision either.

Here goes nothing...

Woo, an update! [Jun. 16th, 2005|01:42 am]
Well it's been ages since I've updated (irony to two posts ago) - a lot has been happening.

Firstly I am on summer vacation till the end of September when at which point my final year of university will begin (assuming I've passed this year's exams).

Summer will be wholly occupied with a job till the aforementioned time to prevent turning into a crazy hermit.

...And since yesterday I have been in existence for approximately 8030 days. Another useless record to add to my name! This year's birthday seemed strangely more exciting than the last (which supposedly should've been the pinnacle of my life) - having sis over at home made it feel all the more "authentic" since she never fails to forget dates.

Expecting results on Monday, which is always the worst part of the entire exam process (very sharp steepness for success or failure). I don't know what to expect but I'm readily devising my contingency plan(s)....with the ambiguity of what a model answer in a computer science exam should consist of I actually do not know what to expect the final outcome to be. Genuinely. I am certain that I am uncertain!

But I digress. I end this post with a pic of me being caught off guard by a dastardly paparazoid.

[Current Mood |contemplativecontemplative]

I was just watching the qualifiers for the European Formula One Grand Prix today - and you know how they show the intricate camera shots of the cars and their drivers leading their mini-power machines around the circuit? Well if you saw it you'll know Nick Heidfeld took pole position today - the ITV commentary tossing in an extra fact mid-speech (as is their style), mentioning how it's actually the first time "Quick-Nick" attained pole in his entire 91-race history.

Just thinking about it, the intricacies involved in getting the fastest lap time in racing, your mind has to be at it's sharpest, being pushed to it's most outer limits and fullest abilities to determine when to brake and accelerate, when to steer, for how long and to what extent so as to match the perfect turning-circle of the car whilst keeping it at max speed, and so on. Indeed possibly it can be done to a mind-blowing degree, perhaps where one experiences a form of unconscious euphoria - being in the zone.

I guess what I'm trying to raise is does this amount of intense focus cause any form of damage on one's own physical or mental health? Perhaps you only work *that* much for the best result but surely there are consequences with working too hard? Okay this is sorta coming from a pretty lazy git. But hear me out...

I could apply it to just about anything - I remember doing my A-Levels for the second time in total intensity, and when I got my results, the feeling that transition of grades from 3 Es to 3 As being the most  rewarding feeling I ever had (it allowed me to be at University for starters, not to mention a hit with the aunties ;) ). But I couldn't help feeling there was a a part of me that I lost during the time I was in training (well...in revision). All of my mind's power concentrated and specialised on three subjects - how could I not help feeling a little vulnerable on other fronts (e.g. in not knowing who was number 1 in Top of the Pops or who had beaten whom in the first round of World Cup 2002?). And even that is quite superficial, there must be loads going on under the surface. Maybe delving into neurology/psychology would help me answer that.

Incredible focus as that was, I haven't experienced it to that level for a while now. Old brain degradation in motion. You can't tell what your mind is capable of sometimes (don't make me count the number of times I've walked up a flight of stairs and nearly felt I was about to ungracefully topple over backwards) or what others' are capable of (hopefully nothing dangerous).

Anyway I'm off to sit in front of the idiot box again to catch the new GP2!

EDIT: Quick-Nick really isn't a good alias to use with the ladies.
